FAQ’s ABOUT FOOD LABELLING
BEST BEFORE DATES ARE ABOUT QUALITY – also identified as BBE (Best Before End) – is all about the quality of the product, and not safety. They are an indicative guide of when the quality of food or drink will start to change. They are not to do with safety. Food that has passed its best before date is safe to eat.
Best before should be considered a rough guide rather than a strict rule. There is no reason to throw away food that goes past it’s best before date.
USE BY DATES ARE ABOUT SAFETY – is all about safety. Foods can be eaten until the use by date, but not after. You will see use by dates on food that goes off quickly, such as dairy products or ready-to-eat salads. Carefully follow the storage instructions – for example, if the instructions on the packaging tell you to refrigerate after opening, you should keep the food in a fridge at 5 degrees or below.
After the use by date, don’t eat, cook or freeze it. The food could be unsafe to eat or drink, even if it has been stored correctly and looks/smells fine.
A lot of foods including meat and milk can be frozen before the use by date, so you can extend the life of these products. Read the manufacturers labelling for guidance on how long to store once frozen.
